The Daily Mail reports that Jadon Sancho came close to signing for Pro League side Al Ettifaq before the Saudi transfer deadline closed on Thursday.
The forward is said to have been open to the move and Man United were prepared to let him go on a season-long loan for free.
However, the Red Devils insisted on including a £50m obligation to buy in his loan agreement and Al Ettifaq pulled out of the deal. They said they didn't have enough money.
Al Ettifaq are owned by the Saudi Ministry of Sports, not the Public Investment Fund that also owns Newcastle, so their transfer kitty is not endless.
Sancho faces an uncertain future at Man United after his social media outburst following Ten Hag's criticism of his application in training.
