Phnom Penh: Cambodia’s Phnom Penh Crown FC stamped their place in history with their 3-0 win over Macarthur FC of Australia as they maintained their perfect start in Group F of the AFC Cup™ 2023/24 match on Thursday.
In guiding his team to the triumph, Oleg Starynskyi also ensured his side became the first from Cambodia to achieve three successive wins in the AFC Cup and in doing so, overtook Boeung Ket FC as the Cambodian club with most victories in the competition with four.
It is an important moment in Cambodian football to understand that we can challenge and can play good football, said Starynskyi.
I hope this victory will give us more confidence to achieve more in the future.
We played our football, and we played with confidence. Defending and counter attacking is not our style, so I really appreciate the players for their effort and amazing job.
We went into the game with full confidence. I told my players to keep the pressure on Macarthur, and we also used home ground advantage to give them more pressure and to control the game.
Playing Macarthur in Australia will be a much more difficult game for us, and this will be a real test. We will prepare to be confident for all the challenges.
An even game that turned in favour of the home team in the last 15 minutes of the match, Shintaro Shimizu grabbed a brace with Phach Socheavila’s stoppage time goal sealing an emphatic win for the Cambodians.
Phnom Penh sit three points ahead of Macarthur with Dynamic Herb Cebu FC, who picked up a 1-0 win over Myanmar’s Shan United, a further three adrift.
Macarthur will host Phnom Penh in two weeks’ time at the Campbelltown Sports Stadium in Sydney.
