According to the Guardian FIFA will hold consultations over the possibility of expanding the Club World Cup to 48 teams starting from the next edition in 2029.
The decision resulted from lobbying by major European clubs that missed out on this summer competition and its significant prize money.
Barcelona with Arsenal and Liverpool and Manchester United and Milan are some of the biggest clubs that have not qualified for the Club World Cup.
Some Premier League sides also promote lifting or relaxing the cap on the number of clubs from one country. This year a league can be represented by only two clubs.
Any expansion is likely to be resisted by the international players union Fifpro who have been unhappy about the introduction of this tournament in general.
