According to the reliable Charles Watts via Caught Offside Arsenal are closing in on reaching an agreement with Real Sociedad to sign Mikel Merino.

Merino has been Mikel Arteta prime target since the former won the Euro 2024 with Spain.

Months of negotiations have dragged on but there seems to be light finally at the end of the tunnel.

But if Merino joins what does it mean for Declan Rice and Thomas Partey!

Well Watts understands Rice position is safe even if Merino plays a more advanced role on the left the Englishman is likely to be moved back to a deep No.8 role.

As for Partey he may be reduced to the role of a squad player who is called upon only when the first-choice members are unavailable.
