The Anthony Gordon story happened in late June but newspapers keep reporting on it. The Daily Mail today gives some insight into what happened a month ago.
Newcastle were ready to part ways with the Englishman to avoid FFP sanctions. After having a swap offer for Jarell Quansah rejected they turned their attention to Joe Gomez.
The Magpies proposed to buy the 27-year-old for £45m and sell Gordon to Liverpool for £75m. Talks went on and the parties even planned a medical to take place in Leipzig with both players at the Euros with England.
However the deal fell through as Newcastle found another way to balance their books selling other players.
Despite that Liverpool might part ways with Gomez this summer as they are theoretically open to selling the Englishman. The defender was said to be happy to move to St James Park where he would gotten regular playing time. Joe remains open to leaving Anfield if a right opportunity arises.
